AutoScribble vs Doodly

One asks you to stage every scene. The other asks you to write well.

Doodly is a drag-and-drop doodle canvas: you place characters and props, set the draw order and timings, then render. AutoScribble takes a written brief or script and returns a narrated hand-drawn film. If you want to stage scenes, Doodly. If you want the film from your words, AutoScribble. Doodly Standard is listed at US$49 per month on its pricing page and AutoScribble charges by the finished minute — both checked 13 September 2026.

The short answer

The difference is where your hour goes. In Doodly the hour goes into the canvas — choosing a character, placing a prop, adjusting how long the hand takes to draw it. In AutoScribble the hour goes into the script, and the film is generated from it.

Both produce hand-drawn explainers. Only one asks you to be the art director.

Who each option suits

  • Choose Doodly if the staging matters: a specific character, a specific prop, in a specific arrangement, repeated across a series so everything matches.
  • Choose AutoScribble if you make videos often, the script is the real work, and turnaround matters more than frame-level control.
  • Choose Doodly for a brand series with a signed-off storyboard. Choose AutoScribble for the twelve explainers nobody has time to storyboard.

The same explainer, built both ways

We used one 60-second explainer — about 150 words, which is a realistic minute of narration — and counted what each route requires. We count scenes and hands-on steps rather than publishing a stopwatch figure for another company's software, because our own timing is the only one we can stand behind.

Nobody reads your onboarding email. That is not rudeness, it is volume.

A new customer gets forty emails on their first morning with you
and yours looks exactly like the other thirty-nine.

So stop explaining in writing. Show them.

One minute of video. Three things only:
where to log in, the first thing to click,
and who to ask when it goes wrong.

Send it the moment they sign up, not on day three.
Put it on the confirmation page as well as in the email,
because that is the one page they definitely look at.

You will answer fewer questions in week one,
and the questions you do get will be better ones.

Cost per finished minute

Doodly Standard at US$49 per month is about US$49 per finished minute if you make one video that month, and about US$12 if you make four. The cost follows your output, not the tool.

AutoScribble is priced the other way round: 100 credits is one finished minute, so 30 seconds is 50 credits, 60 is 100 and 120 is 200. That is £9 a minute on the smallest credit pack, or roughly £4.90 a minute if you use the 1,000 monthly credits on the £49 Pro plan. A slow month costs nothing extra.

  • 30 seconds — 50 credits
  • 60 seconds — 100 credits
  • 120 seconds — 200 credits
  • 100 welcome credits on signup, and they never expire

Where Doodly wins

Staged storytelling. If the video needs a recognisable character doing a specific thing in a specific place, and the same character has to reappear in video nine, a canvas with a character library is the right tool and you should use it.

It also wins when you want to keep nudging one film for months. A project file you reopen is a genuine advantage over regenerating.

Where AutoScribble wins

Throughput and repeatability. When a dozen explainers need to exist this quarter, writing twelve scripts is achievable and staging four hundred scenes is not.

It also wins when the video has to change often. Edit the narration — with the timestamps visible — and remake; you get a new version, and the credit cost appears before you confirm. Videos stay private by default and only appear in the public gallery if you choose to show them.

Next step

Take the script for a video you have been putting off staging and paste it below. One minute of finished video is covered by the 100 credits you get on signup.

Common questions

Is AutoScribble a Doodly replacement?
For explainers driven by a script, yes — you get a narrated hand-drawn film without staging scenes. For character-staged storytelling with a recurring cast, Doodly's canvas is the better fit.
Which is cheaper?
Doodly Standard is listed at US$49 per month, checked 13 September 2026, regardless of how many videos you make. AutoScribble is £9 per finished minute pay-as-you-go, or about £4.90 a minute on the £49 Pro plan. Low volume favours AutoScribble; heavy weekly use favours a flat subscription.
Can I change the video after it is generated?
Yes. Edit the script and remake it. That creates a new version and the credit cost is shown before you confirm.
Can I use my own logo?
Yes — the logo is one of the four choices, alongside orientation, narration voice and length.
