Is AI-Generated Whiteboard Video Actually Any Good?
The honest version, including the parts that are not flattering.
It depends what you are comparing it to. Against a commissioned animation studio, no: you get less art direction, fewer bespoke characters and no revision meetings. Against nothing - the video you were never going to make because it cost four thousand pounds and took six weeks - it is very good indeed. This page sets out where the line sits, using what we see in real renders rather than marketing copy.

The short answer
AI-generated whiteboard video is genuinely good at explanation: a clear idea, narrated, drawn out step by step, finished in minutes. It is not good at brand-defining hero films, precise character acting or anything where every frame must be art-directed.
If your video exists to make something understood, it holds up. If it exists to win an award, it does not.
What it does well
The strengths are consistent across the films we see.
- Sequence. A drawn explanation unfolds in the order the narration needs, which is exactly how teaching works.
- Speed. Minutes rather than weeks, which means you make the video for the small question, not just the big launch.
- Consistency. Every film looks like it came from the same place, which matters when you publish weekly.
- Revisability. Change the script, remake the film. There is no studio to re-book.
Where it falls short
We would rather you knew this before you spend credits than after.
- Finished length can come in under what you ordered - a two-minute order may deliver closer to ninety seconds. You are billed on the seconds actually delivered and the difference is returned automatically.
- Fine detail in illustrations is suggestive rather than literal. It will draw a shop, not your shop.
- Complex on-screen text is unreliable at small sizes. Keep numbers and names few and large.
- It is not an editor. You cannot nudge a single frame; you change the script and remake.
How to judge it in ten minutes, free
Do not take our word for it, and do not read another comparison table. The gallery below is unedited output from real accounts. Then make one yourself: new accounts get 100 credits, which is a full minute of finished video, so the test costs nothing.
Give it something you genuinely need explained, not a demo topic. AI video is at its best on real material, and at its most obviously generic on made-up material.
A good first test prompt: Explain to a first-time customer why our service is priced per project rather than per hour, and what that means for their budget. Friendly, no jargon, 60 seconds.
How it compares to the alternatives
An honest comparison of the four ways people actually get an explainer made.
| Route | Typical turnaround | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animation studio | 4-8 weeks | Thousands | Brand hero films |
| DIY whiteboard software | 1-3 days per video, plus a learning curve | Monthly subscription | People who enjoy editing timelines |
| Screen recording with a voiceover | An afternoon | Free | Software walkthroughs |
| AutoScribble | About ten minutes | 100 credits per finished minute | Explaining things clearly, often |
Limits and honesty
We will not claim results we cannot show you. We do not publish view-count case studies we have not measured, we do not promise rankings, and we do not pretend the render is instant. What we will say is that the quality bar has moved far enough that the question is no longer whether the output is usable - it is whether the idea in your script is any good.
Next step
Write the thing you would explain out loud to a customer. Read the script it produces. Judge it then.

Common questions
- Will it look like every other AI video?
- The look adapts to the subject rather than using one fixed template, and you choose the orientation, voice and length. Two films on very different subjects should not look interchangeable - if yours do, remake with more specific direction in the prompt.
- Can I use it for client work?
- Yes. You own the output and can download the MP4 and publish it anywhere. Agency accounts commonly run several client brands from one workspace.
- What if the finished video is shorter than I ordered?
- You are charged for the seconds actually delivered and the difference returns to your balance automatically. If a film has a rendering fault, remake it at no cost.
- Is the narration a real voice?
- It is synthesised narration, and it is clearly good enough for explanation. You can choose male or female delivery, or connect your own ElevenLabs voice and use that instead.
