Explainer video agency or AI: which fits your project
Score your project on four questions and the answer stops being a matter of taste.
Published 2026 cost guides put explainer video agencies at roughly US$3,000 to US$15,000 per finished minute, with premium animation running far higher. Generating the same minute costs 100 credits here — £9 or US$12. That gap is not the decision on its own. What decides it is how much is riding on the film, how soon you need it, how many rounds of change you expect, and how much brand risk a generic-looking result carries. Score those four and the answer is usually obvious.
The short answer
An agency is a team: strategist, writer, illustrator, animator, voice direction, project manager. You are buying a process and someone accountable for the outcome, over several weeks.
Generating it yourself is a tool: you write, approve and watch, in minutes, at a per-minute price. Nobody is accountable for the idea except you.
One flagship film with a budget behind it is agency work. A steady stream of clear explanations is not.
Who each option suits
- An agency — funding announcements, category launches, brand films, regulated messaging that needs review, anything where the video is the campaign.
- Generating it yourself — onboarding, training, product updates, sales follow-ups, always-on social: the fifty videos nobody was ever going to commission.
- Both — the usual healthy split is one commissioned film a year and everything else made in-house.

Agency figures below are what published 2026 cost guides state, not quotes we obtained. Pexo's September 2026 breakdown puts agencies at US$3,000 to US$15,000 or more per finished minute; D-MAK's 2026 guide puts a professional explainer at US$3,000 to US$25,000, with many custom sixty-second animations between US$5,000 and US$15,000 and premium 3D or hybrid work from US$25,000 upward.

The four-question framework
This is the original element of this page. Score each question one to five and add them up. It takes two minutes and settles most arguments.
- Most internal and always-on video scores under 9. Most launch films score over 14.
- If you land in the middle, generating a version is the cheapest possible research: it costs a minute of credits and it tells you what the film actually needs to say.
- Score honestly on brand risk. Wanting a distinctive look and needing one are different things.
1. STAKES — what happens if this film is merely fine?
1 = nobody outside the team notices
5 = it fronts a launch, a funding round or a rebrand
2. TIMELINE — when does it need to be live?
1 = this week
3 = this month
5 = we have a quarter and an approvals process
3. REVISIONS — how many rounds of change do you honestly expect?
1 = I will just remake it myself until I like it
3 = two or three stakeholders will have views
5 = legal, brand and a committee all sign off
4. BRAND RISK — how much does it cost you if it looks like other good videos?
1 = nothing, it needs to be clear
5 = the look is the differentiator; we own an illustration style
SCORE
4 – 8 Generate it yourself. Commissioning this would waste money and weeks.
9 – 13 Generate a version first, then decide. The draft will sharpen the brief
either way, and you may find it is already good enough.
14 – 20 Hire an agency, and hold the budget for it. This is the film that has
to be right.When the agency is the better choice
Go to an agency when the film carries real commercial weight: a launch, a category-defining explainer, an investor story, anything where a weak result costs far more than the fee. Go to one when you need a strategist to work out what the message is, when characters and bespoke illustration are part of the brand, when the video must sit inside a wider campaign with live footage and a soundtrack, or when regulated content needs documented review and someone accountable for sign-off.
We would rather say that plainly than win a project we are the wrong fit for.
What you get here
Four choices per film: orientation (portrait 9:16 by default, landscape or square), narration voice, length of 30, 60 or 120 seconds, and an optional logo. Inputs are a typed brief, a pasted script, or an uploaded plain-text or markdown file.
- Length is a hard constraint on the script; if a film comes in shorter than ordered you are billed on the actual seconds and refunded the difference.
- Films are private to your account unless you opt into the public gallery.
- One-click MP4, expiring private share links, email sharing with saved recipients, and caption-ready hand-offs.
Your next step
Score your project, then paste the brief and watch the sixty-second version — even if you end up briefing an agency, you will brief them better. The first minute is free. See also hiring a freelancer or generating it yourself and AutoScribble for agencies if you are the agency.
Try it on your own script
Free to write and rewrite. Credits are only used when you generate.
Common questions
- How much does an explainer video agency cost?
- Published 2026 cost guides put agencies at roughly US$3,000 to US$15,000 per finished minute, with premium 3D or hybrid production running from US$25,000 upward. Scope drives the number more than anything else.
- What does the same minute cost here?
- 100 credits — £9 or US$12 as a one-off pack, or about £4.90 a minute on the Pro plan. The 100 welcome credits cover your first minute.
- Is AI video good enough for a launch?
- For a launch where the film is the campaign, hire an agency. For everything around the launch — onboarding, training, social explainers, follow-ups — generating it yourself is usually the better use of the budget.
- Can agencies use AutoScribble for client work?
- Yes, and many do for volume work. Films sit in a private library, share links expire, and per-minute pricing makes client costs predictable.
