Free Whiteboard Animation: What You Really Get
The restrictions, listed plainly, so you know what leaves the free tier with you.
"Free" almost always means free to make, not free to keep. The interesting part of every free tier is the line about watermarks, resolution and download counts — so that is what this page lists, one tool at a time, from each company own page.
The short answer
You can make a whiteboard video for nothing today, but every free route applies at least one of four restrictions: a watermark on the finished file, a resolution cap, a length cap, or a limit on how many videos you may download. Powtoon free is 720p, three minutes and watermarked; VideoScribe free is a 7-day trial with three downloads, a five-minute maximum and a watermark; Renderforest free is watermarked.
AutoScribble gives new accounts 100 credits that never expire — one full minute of finished video, downloadable as an MP4. All figures read 13 September 2026.
Who each option suits
- Testing the idea internally — any free tier is fine. A watermark does not matter in a team chat.
- A one-off video you need to keep — you want a route where the finished file is clean, not a trial export.
- Students and classroom use — length-capped free tiers are usually enough; most teaching clips are under three minutes.
- Client or public-facing work — a watermarked file will cost you more in credibility than the subscription saves.

Sourced comparison: what the first paid step costs
If the free route runs out, this is the next rung on each ladder, on equivalent billing terms.

| Animaker | Personal US$12 per month billed annually, US$19 month-to-month | Per seat |

The rights question nobody answers
Free tiers rarely spell out commercial rights on the same page as the price. Before you put a free-tier video in front of customers, read the terms for the specific tier you used, not the marketing page for the product as a whole. A watermark is visible; a licence restriction is not, and it is the one that causes trouble later.
On AutoScribble, videos are private by default. They appear in the public gallery only if you choose to put them there, credited to your public username. Commercial use is included on paid plans.
When a free tier is the right answer
If you are learning, testing a format, or making something that will only ever be watched internally, take the free tier and enjoy it. There is no sense paying to find out whether whiteboard video suits your message.
If you make one video a quarter and a watermark is genuinely fine, a free tier can carry you for years. Say that plainly: not everyone needs to buy anything.
Next step
If you want one clean, narrated minute with nothing stamped across it, your welcome credits cover exactly that. Paste your script and see it drawn.
If free turns out to cost you an afternoon, compare the real totals in the cheapest ways to get an explainer video made.
Try it on your own script
Free to write and rewrite. Credits are only used when you generate.
Common questions
- Is there a genuinely free whiteboard animation maker?
- Several tools have free tiers, but each applies a restriction: Powtoon free is 720p, three minutes and watermarked; VideoScribe free is a 7-day trial with three downloads and a watermark; Renderforest free watermarks its videos. All checked 13 September 2026.
- How do I make a whiteboard video without a watermark?
- Either pay for a tier that removes it, or use a route where the finished file is clean to begin with. AutoScribble gives new accounts 100 credits — one finished minute — and the MP4 you download is yours.
- Do free credits expire on AutoScribble?
- No. The 100 welcome credits never expire. 100 credits is one minute of finished video, so a 30-second film costs 50 and a 60-second film costs 100.
- Can I use a free-tier video commercially?
- Check the licence terms for the exact tier you used, since rights differ by tier and are rarely on the pricing page. AutoScribble includes commercial use on paid plans.
