Your pencil, the air, and your body are made of atoms. Atoms are tiny building blocks, far too small to see with your eyes.
At the centre is a tiny nucleus. It contains protons, with positive charge, and usually neutrons, with no charge.
Electrons have negative charge and move around the nucleus. They don't follow neat paths like planets; we describe where they're likely to be.
Most of an atom is empty space. Almost all its mass is packed into the nucleus.
The number of protons tells you which element it is. Hydrogen has one; carbon has six.
Atoms can join to make molecules, like water. Different atoms, joined in different ways, help make the world around you!
