Meet Zaki, newly 13, living in the North of England. It's October 2, 2026.
His world is school, family, friends, football and gaming. And wondering what's for dinner.
Fast-forward seventeen years: it's 2043, and Zaki is 30. Nobody knows his future, but preparing matters more than predicting.
One force likely to shape that future is artificial intelligence. What should Zaki learn when machines can do more?
AI already writes, codes and generates images and video. By 2043, it could feel as ordinary as the internet.
For generations, the familiar route was school, qualifications, then a career. Zaki's route may involve more changes of direction.
AI could take over tasks within many professions. That doesn't necessarily mean those professions disappear; the human work may change.
Curiosity, creativity, communication and judgement could become even more valuable. So could adaptability and knowing how to use technology well.
For some jobs, Zaki's competition could stretch far beyond England. Applicants might live in London, Lahore, Mumbai or elsewhere.
But that connection works both ways. Zaki could also reach customers around the world.
Imagine he starts a business at 20. AI might help him design a product and build its software.
It might also help with advertising, translation and customer questions. A small team could attempt work that previously needed more people.
Yet technology won't remove every obstacle. Housing and everyday costs could still shape his choices.
His generation will also face climate risks and energy challenges. An ageing population could put further pressure on services.
Those challenges may also create opportunities. Better batteries, renewable energy and new medicines could open unfamiliar career paths.
But one challenge is already close at hand. Zaki will need to protect his attention.
Recommendation systems can influence what people watch and buy. More capable systems could make switching off harder.
AI-generated voices and videos can also mislead. Checking evidence and questioning appearances will matter.
Putting the phone down creates room for something different. Real conversations and independent thought deserve time too.
Zaki doesn't need a perfect forecast of 2043. He needs to keep learning and adjusting as circumstances change.
That means understanding technology without neglecting himself. Looking after his health and learning how money works matter too.
Strong relationships and curiosity belong in that preparation. Today's world isn't a permanent instruction manual.
Seventeen years from now, Zaki will be 30. Technology, work and business will change, and so will he.
So don't ask only what his world will look like. Ask who Zaki will become by the time he gets there.
