Diarrhea is a common side effect of some cancer treatments. It can affect up to 80 percent of patients. Fortunately, most episodes can be managed at home.
Some cancer treatments can irritate the lining of the intestine. This can happen with treatments such as irinotecan, 5-FU, and some immunotherapies.
When the intestine is irritated, it may not absorb water as well. This can make bowel movements more frequent and more liquid.
Loperamide, also known as Imodium, can help control diarrhea. Take four milligrams, or two tablets, after the first loose bowel movement. Then take two milligrams, or one tablet, after each liquid bowel movement.
